BANGKOK
Thailand’s capital and major tourist gateway Bangkok also known as the ‘City of Angels’ boasts bargain shopping, funky markets, a riverside full of unique attractions, local delicacies, bustling nightlife and amazing historical sights that display its unique heritage.
Must-see attractions include the Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo), Wat Po and Wat Arun, these are close to each other and can be seen in depth by tour guide or viewed by riverside boat.
A popular hive for budget travellers and backpackers is the famous Khao San Road, this short street in central Bangkok was once a major rice market where its name “Khaosan” translated as “milled rice” derives from. Here you will find all sorts of cheap shops, accommodation, travel agents and travel booking options (plus the Stray Bangkok shop one block away!).
One of the city's regionally famous parks known as Bangkok's Central Park is Lumphini Park. Once a camp for Japanese soldiers during World War II today the park holds grand pageants and ceremonies of the Thai constitution.
Due to the city's elaborate network of canals known as khlongs Bangkok is also nicknamed “Venice of the East". Although many of these canals have been turned into roads there are still plenty in and around Bangkok that are great for sightseeing, some markets continue to operate along the banks including the popular floating market in the Taling Chan District.
